Troy Fautanu, Offensive Tackle, Washington
Poles now has his shiny new toy in Williams. He also added some weapons for him. Now what he has to do is to protect him. It is difficult for the rookie to make throws if he is constantly on his back. He needs good protection.
The Chicago Bears have Braxton Jones at left tackle. He has been decent in his two seasons. However, Poles is trying to start a new era of winning football. He wants to take Williams to heights never seen by a Chicago Bears quarterback. The protection cannot be just decent. It has to be elite.
Troy Fautanu can provide the protection Williams needs. He would be an instant upgrade over Jones. That is not to say that Jones is bad. As mentioned, he is decent. He would likely be more valuable in a reserve role than as a starter. With two seasons of starting experience, he could come in as a backup and do a good job. If he is needed to step up as a starter in a pinch he can do that.
Fautanu has the experience to play anything Waldron can come up with for him. In Washington, he played in a pass-heavy, multiple-run scheme system. He dealt with zone concepts, pin-pull, counters, and extensive empty pass formations that left him on an island.
Fauntanu measures at 6-foot-4, 317 pounds. Despite his size, he is very athletic. He has quick feet and he has good lateral movement. Additionally, he has great strength and a mean streak. He is violent with his punch and he knocks rushers off-balance.
Fauntanu has a high motor and plays to the whistle. He has a mean streak and wants to punish you. When a defender goes up against him he will have a long, tiring game. He wants to wear people down so the offense can move easily in the fourth quarter.
Fauntanu would be a great blindside blocker for Williams. He should be an anchor for an offensive line for a decade and make some quarterback, perhaps Williams, feel happy and protected.
