Backup quarterback battle
The Chicago Bears already announced that Williams will be the starting quarterback this season. He will get the work with the starters and prepare to lead the offense. That means there will be a battle at QB2.
Tyson Bagent won the backup quarterback job last season as an undrafted rookie. He got to play in five games, four of them starts. He did about what you’d expect from an undrafted rookie thrust into a starting job. He completed 65.8 percent of his passes. However, he had just 3 touchdowns against six interceptions. Also, he averaged just 4.5 adjusted yards per attempt and 9.1 yards per completion.
Bagent is an effective passer but he struggles throwing the ball downfield. We saw a few interceptions when he had to throw the ball deep. He could kill you with short passes, though.
Brett Rypien is at camp mainly because he knows Waldron’s system. He could assist the other players in better understanding what Waldron expects, as well as the terminology.
Rypien has not had much success, however. Last season, in two games (one start), he completed just 47.4 percent of his passes. He had no touchdowns and one interception. In his career, he completed 58.3 percent of his passes and has 4 touchdowns to 9 interceptions.
It will be interesting what the Chicago Bears do as they progress during offseason work. As mentioned before, this is a team that is looking to contend for a playoff spot. Should something happen to Williams, they want to have a capable backup to take over.
At first glance, it is difficult to see either one of these quarterbacks to take over and succeed. This is an offense that can make plays on short, intermediate, and deep plays. Bagent can maybe help in the short term. However, having him gives diminishing returns.
As the Chicago Bears’ camps progress, keep an eye out on the waiver wire. The team’s QB2 could either be currently on another team or at home waiting for a call.
