Round 1 (via Carolina): Drake Maye, QB – North Carolina
At times analysts let bias against certain schools show when evaluating NFL talent. In history, the bigger and better conferences in the NFL usually produce the best talent at the next level, so I understand why. And at first, watching Drake Maye for Chicago Bears fans will remind them of Mitch Trubisky, but that’s only due to the fact that both of them went to the University of North Carolina.
However, I’m here to tell you this: focus on the player, not the school. Drake Maye can ball.

When talking about your prototypical franchise NFL quarterback, Maye just fits the mold. Standing at 6’4, 220 pounds and an electric arm. Thus far this season, he’s thrown for 3145 yards and accumulated 29 total touchdowns, while throwing just 6 INT’s. He’s off to a great start statistically, and this comes after his massive sophomore year, where he threw 38 touchdowns as opposed to just 7 interceptions.
These Tar Heels that he is leading have an under average offensive line, and his supporting cast isn’t the best either. Some scouts have said he’d be leading any of the top teams to a College Football Playoff berth if he was around the right talent. As no prospect is perfect, he can take too long to process certain reads, but I believe that can come with time. I wrote a more in-depth article on Drake Maye, if you’d like to check it out, linked here.
In addition to Maye’s electric arm, he also brings mobility and elusiveness at the position. The Chicago Bears are on their last legs with this Justin Fields experiment, and whether it’s his fault or not, they must move forward and try to build a better offense than they currently have. That starts with the QB position.
