Round 5, Pick 149 (projected): RB Brashard Smith, SMU / 5’9, 195 LBS

The Bears need more speed out of the backfield in 2025, and Brashard Smith indeed fits the mold. One of the burners in this class, Smith shows exceptional burst in the open field and could be a perfect third-down back in the modern NFL. He’s a former wideout and has hands like one as well.
The former Miami Hurricane transferred to SMU in 2024 and, in doing so, made the full switch to running back. Smith’s quick-twitch and pure speed would make him a good complement to DeAndre Swift and could help immediately in the passing attack out of the backfield.
Smith had a great showing in the Senior Bowl down in Mobile, Alabama, and has had scouts talking about him ever since. This class is full of good running backs, giving the Bears a chance to grab a guy like Smith late.

His value doesn’t stop there, as the former SMU Mustang is also an elite kick returner. While he may not be an everyday back in the NFL due to his size, his potential to break open the game out of the backfield in passing situations should not be undermined.
Smith ran for over 1,300 yards in 2024 and had 14 rushing touchdowns as well, making it his breakout season at the collegiate level. He also had 39 receptions for 327 yards, hauling in four receiving touchdowns in the process. The transfer portal may have saved Smith and turned him from a special teams specialist to a starting third down back. Time will tell, but I love this selection for the Bears at this point.
That concludes our second mock draft of the 2025 season. After this week’s combine, expect another, as there will be plenty of movement on draft boards across the league in preparation for the 2025 NFL Draft.
