Round 5, Pick 148: S Jonas Sanker, Virginia / 6’0, 206 lbs

There isn’t any situation in which I wouldn’t have the Bears taking a safety at some point in the 2025 NFL Draft. It’s a need that may arise quicker than fans think, with the aging Kevin Byard being a cut candidate this upcoming camp.
Keep an eye on Jonas Sanker. He’s a perfect fit for this Chicago defense and could provide legit special teams’ help in year one. Sanker is an exceptional run-stopper and has shown growth over his collegiate career in pass defense. His ability to break down formations and call out plays has been something his peers at UVA loved, as well as his leadership. You can’t put a price on intangibles, especially in the NFL.
Jonas Sanker is my type of safety. Strong player with long arms and runs the alley very well. Seems like the perfect 3rd safety for a team in year one due to his physicality and special teams upside. pic.twitter.com/v11AH20bRN

His athletic ability leaves some to be desired, and that’s probably why he isn’t going to get drafted earlier. While Sanker is fast in his own right, NFL speed is much different. His college tape does show his closeout speed to be one of his best attributes.
In 2024, Sanker snagged his second collegiate INT and racked up two sacks as well. This went along with his impressive nine tackles for loss. Sanker reminds me a lot of Brisker and could back him up if that’s the case. I do think the Bears could draft a safety even earlier, especially if they fall in love with one during the pre-draft process.
