The Chicago Bears coaching search ended on Monday, just two weeks after the team’s offseason officially began.
And after interviews, the Bears are set to hire former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as the franchise’s 19thhead coach. News broke on Monday that the two sides were close to a deal, just two days after the Lions were eliminated.
With Johnson heading to Chicago, the next step is getting his staff in place and there are some rumors already circulating as to who he could hire. The first report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter as he lists former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator and head coach Dennis Allen as the leader to run the Bears defense:
“Ben Johnson has been busy assembiling a star-studded coaching staff. The leading candidate to become his defensive coordinator in Chicago is former Saints HC Dennis Allen, per league sources.
If the Bears do hire him, Allen provides a large wealth of knowledge and experience to the Bears coaching staff.
Dennis Allen would bring decades of experience to the Chicago Bears if hired.
Allen previously served as the defensive coordinator of the Saints from 2015 to 2021 and was the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos during the 2011 season. He was a member of Sean Payton’s 2010 Super Bowl-winning team, serving as the secondary coach. During his time as secondary coach, the Saints ranked third in the NFL in interceptions.
Even though Allen has not had the best track record as a head coach, he still is a very great defensive mind and could help the run defense improve and make the secondary even more aggressive.
Hiring Dennis Allen could be very beneficial to the Chicago Bears
Not only Allen is a great defensive mind, but him having previous head coaching experience would be extremely beneficial for a rookie head coach. Allen will be able to help with crucial in-game decisions to ease pressure on Johnson. This could also help Johnson be able to focus more on Caleb Williams and the Bears offense as well.
Having Allen by Johnson’s side could help the Bears greatly in the 2025 season and beyond.
It will be interesting to see if Allen is hired and who else will join this new Bears coaching staff.
