The Chicago Bears coaching search continues as they have held first interviews with several candidates on their list. With only one opening filled from the cycle thus far, the front office still has its pick of the litter regarding who they want to lead the franchise.
It’s hard to understand the Bears process as of now but the list is long and it appears as if they want to explore as many options as possible. However, there are some concerns with the search in a new report.
Are the Chicago Bears messing up this coaching search?
Bill Zimmerman of Windy City Gridiron put out an interesting piece on Tuesday, signalling some concerns from those around the league with the Bears’ coaching search. Here is what Zimmerman reported in his latest piece:
“Multiple sources around the league have told Windy City Gridiron that the Bears list has grown so large that it’s creating a detriment to the perception of the franchise, which could end up costing them their top choice.
One former executive said, “Look at the Patriots and the Raiders. The Patriots wanted Vrabel from the onset. The Raiders are ensuring the world knows their top target is Ben Johnson. The Bears want the league to know they are leaving no stone unturned. But you don’t find great coaches under a rock.”
It was known throughout the cycle that the New England Patriots wanted Mike Vrabel, and that’s exactly who they got as their hire. The Bears are in danger of losing out on Ben Johnson as well based on reports of Las Vegas making a huge run at the Lions offensive coordinator. Vrabel and Johnson were the two big candidates in this coaching cycle, and there’s a good chance that the Bears don’t end up hiring either of them.
The other highly regarded coaching options that Chicago has chatted with include Aaron Glenn, Anthony Weaver, Pete Carroll, Johnson and more.
Ryan Poles needs to avoid losing out on the right candidate
With teams being knocked out of the playoffs, Poles and his staff need to get on it when it comes to trimming down their crop of candidates. Thanks to the Minnesota Vikings losing on Monday night in the wild card round, Brian Flores can be formally interviewed by the Bears front office but not until January 20th.
The defensive-minded candidate has previous NFL head coaching experience and connections to Chicago. Flores served as the Dolphins head coach for three seasons and played with Poles at Boston College. Bears’ CEO Kevin Warren worked in the Vikings organization for many years and his ties there can help Chicago gather further intel on Flores for this role.
Another serious candidate that the team is talking to on Wednesday is Mike McCarthy.
The former Packers and Cowboys head coach has shown that he can win at multiple stops and even has a Super Bowl to his name. McCarthy has worked with Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, and Dak Prescott as signal callers in his offense, and would certainly do what he can to get the most out of Caleb Williams as he prepares for his second NFL season.
