The Chicago Bears are continuing their extensive head coaching search and as the days go by, the list of candidates continues to grow.
The Bears recently confirmed they interviewed Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken and Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady. And on Saturday, they have finished a virtual interview with another big name in the NFL world.
In a post on X, the Bears confirmed that they finished an interview with current Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator and former Miami Dolphins head coach, Brian Flores.
Flores and the Vikings’ defense have been among the best this season. During the 2024 season, the Vikings’ defense was tied for first in turnovers, fifth in points allowed, and fourth in sacks.
The Chicago Bears front office does have ties with Brian Flores
It is interesting to note that Flores has ties with Ryan Poles. Flores and Poles were teammates at Boston College in 2003.
Before becoming the Minnesota defensive coordinator, Flores served as head coach of the Miami Dolphins for three seasons before being fired in 2021. In 2022, Flores served as the linebackers coach in Pittsburgh under Mike Tomlin, and in 2023 he joined the Vikings under head coach Kevin O’Connell.
Does Brian Flores deserve another shot as a head coach?
Flores’ last run as a head coach did end in quite a controversy. Flores was criticized heavily by Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as he accused Flores of telling the quarterback that he was not good enough and did not belong on the Dolphins.
If Flores does get the job as Bears head coach, he will have to make sure things like this do not happen with Caleb Williams. The relationship between the head coach and the starting quarterback is beyond important in the NFL.
Even though these things happened, Flores is still an elite defensive mind. But the question remains, will the Bears hire yet another defensive head coach, or will the Bears finally hire an offensive-minded head coach who can continue the development of Williams?
