This has the chance to be a transformational offseason for the Chicago Bears.
General manager Ryan Poles and the rest of the franchise, of course, have the opportunity to hire the organization’s next head coach which will dictate not only the trajectory of quarterback Caleb Williams’ development but whether the organization can level up and compete in the NFC North and beyond.
Likewise, there are several free agency decisions that will need to be made in the coming months, and a course charted to not only continue building around Williams on offense but constructing a complementary defense capable of being disruptive and consistently creating turnovers.
However, there’s an item not much lower on the Bears’ to-do list that may have major ramifications for Chicago’s future, as well.
“Bring back nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon,” ESPN’s Courtney Cronin writes. “Who is eligible for a contract extension this offseason. The 2022 second-round pick is a critical player in the Bears’ secondary.”
Through his first three seasons, Gordon has already produced 207 total tackles with five interceptions and 1.5 sacks, developing a reputation as a steady playmaker on the back-end of the Bears’ defense.
This past season, Pro Football Focus points out that Gordon’s nine quarterback pressures were second-most among NFL cornerbacks, underscoring his versatility and impact.
The Bears need impact players, and taking care of keeping a homegrown talent like Gordon in the fold is how successful teams are built.
