The Chicago Bears completed their most important coaching hire in franchise history by hiring former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson on Monday. And now, the question going around is who will Johnson bring in for his coaching staff. According to a top Bears insider, another Saints coordinator is a possibility.
In a post on X, Brad Biggs mentioned that a former Saints coordinator could end up becoming the new special teams coordinator for the Chicago Bears.
“A possibility for special teams coordinator for the Bears is Darren Rizzi. How likely? That’s unknown.
Rizzi worked with Ben Johnson in Miami. He also worked a long time with Sean Payton and the Broncos are trying to hire him. Two other teams also believed to belived to be in the mix.”
Darren Rizzi is currently the interim head coach of the New Orleans Saints and previously served as the assistant head coach and special teams coordinator for the Saints from 2022 to 2024. Rizzi replaced former Saints head coach and rumored Bears defensive coordinator candidate Dennis Allen and ended the 2024 season with a 3-5 record.
Darren Rizzi has ties to Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson
Darren Rizzi worked with new Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson for a number of years in Miami. Rizzi served as special teams coordinator in Miami from 2010-2018 while Johnson served as a tight ends coach, wide receivers coach, and assistant quarterbacks coach throughout his tenure on the Dolphins.
Rizzi also has worked with the front-runner for Bears defensive coordinator, Dennis Allen. He served as Saints assistant head coach and special teams coordinator during Allen’s tenure as head coach of the Saints.
The Chicago Bears are trying to add a heavy NFL-experienced coaching staff
It looks like Johnson and the Bears are attempting to bring on a coaching staff that has plenty of NFL coaching experience, especially ones with head coaching experience.
There is a chance that the Bears could bring on an all-star coaching staff for the 2025 season. I genuinely think bringing on veteran coaches such as Rizzi and Allen could benefit not only Johnson but the Bears roster as well. This is a very exciting time to be a Bears fan and the 2025 season is shaping up to be a fun one.
