Ben Johnson was officially introduced as the new head coach of the Chicago Bears at Halas Hall on Wednesday. The former Lions offensive guru received a standing ovation with his family at the team facility and set the tone for what the new standard of Bears football will look like.
The hiring of Johnson begins a new era in the Windy City. It is still unthinkable for fans that the front office went out and got the hottest coaching candidate available since Kyle Shanahan. There is still work that needs to be done to finish assembling Johnson’s staff, but having the right man in charge is exactly the start that Chicago needs. In his opening press conference on Wednesday, Johnson delivered a message to the most important player on the roster.
Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson had a message for Caleb Williams
Johnson looked directly at Williams during his press conference and addressed that it is more than just him that he needs to be locked in with on the offensive side of the ball.
“I’m excited to work with you but it’s going to take more than just you,” Johnson said to the young quarterback.
Williams and Rome Odunze are entering their second NFL seasons and the former Washington Huskie is an obvious candidate for who Johnson is looking to be in sync with from the jump. Odunze has the talent to be a number one option in the league, and it will be up to the offensive guru to tap into his potential.
Along with Odunze, DJ Moore and Cole Kmet should have big roles per usual in the passing game. Many believe that Moore has not been properly used in his entire career, but that could all change now. Kmet was a non-factor in 2024 regardless of who was calling plays. Similar to his counterparts, the Chicagoland native is too talented to not have the ball in his hands at any point in a game.
Johnson has a lot to work with on the offensive side of the ball and free agency is still two months away. It will be through that and the draft where the new head coach can assemble all of the assets necessary for his first season in Chicago.
