The Chicago Bears have the opportunity to take a bold step, and jumpstart the organization’s rebuild while setting new head coach Ben Johnson and quarterback Caleb Williams up to take a major step in 2025.
Trading for former NFL Defensive Player of The Year Myles Garrett, who formally requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns on Monday, checks each of those boxes.
Garrett, who has produced 102.5 sacks in his career and is riding a two-season streak of 14 sacks, is the kind of game-changing talent along the front seven who can alter the course of not only a defense but an entire franchise.
While the Bears still need to invest significant draft capital in the offensive line in the coming offseasons to prepare Williams and the offense to take major steps in Johnson’s scheme, a disruptive force like Garrett along the front seven could instantly elevate Chicago into contenders in the NFC North.
Chicago Bears trade proposal for Myles Garrett revealed
Bleacher Report NFL analyst Alex Kay put together a list of trade proposals for several teams who should be in the market for Garrett’s services, including a blockbuster offer by the Bears:
Chicago Bears trade: 2025 First-Round pick (No. 10 overall), 2025 Second-Round Pick (No. 41 overall), 2025 Fifth-Round Pick, CB Kyler Gordon
Cleveland Browns Trade: EDGE Myles Garrett
While weakening the secondary, and trading two top-45 selections might not be ideal for the Bears, Garrett represents a foundational building block and if the offense is prepared under Johnson to take a big step and Williams makes major strides in 2025, this is the type of bold move general manager Ryan Poles needs to look into to alter the course of the franchise.
“Adding Garrett into the mix would supercharge a Chicago defense that struggled in 2024,” Kay writes for B/R. “The Bears allowed the sixth-most yards per game in the league and recorded only 40 sacks and 11 interceptions on the year.
“Chicago already employs one of the NFL’s better edge defenders in Montez Sweat, but the 28-year-old took a step back and recorded only 5.5 sacks during his first full season in the Windy City. Pairing him with Garrett would create a devastating duo that would terrorize opposing quarterbacks.”
A pass rush duo as dominant as Garrett and Sweat could prove invaluable to the defense not only improving in 2025 but the Bears becoming perennial contenders in the coming years.
