With the Chicago Bears holding three picks in the first two rounds in April’s draft, they will be looking at plenty of edge rushing and offensive lineman to select. On the offensive side of the ball, it is likely that three new lineman will need to be acquired prior to next season. They allowed 68 sacks in 2024, by far the most in the NFL.
The team has struggled mightily to get to the quarterback over the past couple of seasons. The defensive line’s pressure rate on opposing signal callers is toward the bottom of the league and it’s an issue that Ryan Poles needs to resolve this offseason. Abdul Carter would be the dream pick for Chicago with the tenth overall selection, but there is a good chance he won’t be around at that point in the first round. With offensive line seeming to be the route the Bears will go at ten, the front office will need to look at second round edge rushing prospects.
The Chicago Bears should look at Colorado’s BJ Green ll
Green ll spent the 2024 season with Colorado, where he was a force on the Buff’s defensive line. Prior to 2024, the Powder Springs, GA native spent three years at Arizona State. After being a highly ranked edge rushing transfer from PFF after 2023, Green ll made sure he left an impact under head coach Deion Sanders.
Green ll logged 7.5 sacks to go along two forced fumbles and 33 total tackles in his lone season with the Buffs. Out of his 21 career sacks at the collegiate level, 13 of them have come in the last two seasons between Arizona State and Colorado.
The promising edge rushing prospect measures at 6’1, 270 lbs and has a fantastic frame that should translate well at the next level. His ability to get to the quarterback is apparent and his success at more than one stop in college shows he can adapt to whatever situation he is thrown into.
BJ Green ll would pair well with the current Chicago Bears line
Montez Sweat desperately needs a solid edge rusher on the opposite side of him in 2025. Ever since Chicago acquired him from Washington in 2023, he hasn’t had much help in getting to the quarterback. Because of this, Sweat has been double-teamed more often than not in pass coverage throughout his time as a Bear and his numbers don’t reflect the contract he was given by the front office.
The value that Green ll would opposite of Sweat on the Bears defensive line would be massive. He will definitely be on the list of options to join the pass rushing front this offseason. If the choice at ten is on the offensive line, it is safe to believe that Green ll will be in play for Chicago if he is available at either of their second round selections.
If not the draft, there are a couple of names in free agency that Poles could look to go after. Josh Sweat and Chase Young are some options that would fit with what the Bears need on their line right now. Both would likely demand short term contracts and with the Chicago Bears cap space this offseason, they could very easily make either candidate a deal that they couldn’t refuse.
Green ll is another name into the fire for Chicago for a position they badly need help at. If the opportunity presents itself in the second round, the front office could definitely put in the card for the successful collegiate edge rusher.
