The Chicago Bears and general manager Ryan Poles seem to be casting a wide net, and focusing on experienced head coaching candidates to replace Matt Eberflus.
Former Seahawks Super Bowl-winning head coach Pete Carroll is set to interview for the Bears’ vacancy, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Carroll, 73, coached the Seahawks from 2010 through the 2023 campaign before mutually agreeing to part ways with the organization. During his 14-year tenure in Seattle, Caroll guided the Seahawks to two consecutive Super Bowl appearances, including a victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII.
Last season, Carroll seemingly hoped to land a head coaching job before the 2024 campaign began but wound up sitting out the season when he was not hired elsewhere.
For Carroll, the opportunity to coach former No. 1 overall pick, quarterback Caleb Williams, could make the Bears an attractive opening to pursue, especially if he is able to land a dynamic offensive coordinator to oversee the former USC Heisman Trophy winner’s development.
Carroll owns a .580 winning percentage, and 181-131-1 record throughout his NFL coaching career.
The Bears will meet with Carroll on Thursday, according to ESPN, and he is the most accomplished candidate to date to interview for the job.
