Tight End Martellus Bennett’s season is over and possibly his time with the team as well.
The Chicago Bears announced that they have placed Bennett on season-ending injured reserve as he deals with a rib injury. Bennett missed the Thanksgiving game in Green Bay and was injured in Sunday’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Bennett’s future is in doubt with the Bears despite him being under contract through next season. The 28-year-old has been unhappy he hasn’t received a contract extension and it’s possible the Bears cut him during the offseason or even pursue a trade.
CBS Chicago’s Dan Durkin broke down the numbers if the Bears do release Bennett:
#Bears Martellus Bennett has one year remaining on his contract. $5.085M base, $100K workout bonus, $1.125 prorated bonus. $5.185M savings.

Bennett led the Bears with 53 receptions in 11 games this season including 439 yards and a touchdown. Backup Zach Miller will be the starter now as he has 16 receptions for 228 yards and four touchdowns.
