Travis Homer, Running Back
The first move Poles made in free agency was a surprise. He signed running back D’Andre Swift. Swift comes to Chicago to become the starter. He joins a pretty solid running back room that also has Khalil Herbert and Roschon Johnson.
The Chicago Bears had a good three-headed monster last season with Herbert, Johnson, and D’Onta Foreman. Foreman is gone now and Swift is the lead back.
The Chicago Bears also had Travis Homer. However, his main job was to be a return specialist. He did get to play more as a running back due to injuries sustained. He was not able to make a big impression, however.
The NFL came up with new special teams returns. It gives some players an extra chance to use their skills to contribute on special teams. Homer has a problem with that, though. He would have to compete with Velus Jones.
Jones has been a disappointment as a wide receiver. He has, however, done a good job as a returner. With the opportunity of having more returns to make big plays, Homer will have a difficult time beating out Jones. Jones is electric as a returner. Jones has incredible speed and vision.
Both Homer and Jones have struggled in their non-special teams roles. The Chicago Bears improved both the running back and wide receiver spots. In addition to Swift, the Bears also signed undrafted rookie Ian Wheeler.
Wheeler was an incredible returner in college. He has breakaway speed in addition to being able to block well. He has a better opportunity to help as a running back in addition to being a returner. Jones had some trouble handling punts so Wheeler can help there.
It will be a long, difficult road for Homer to make the team in 2024.
