Brett Rypien, Quarterback
Poles signed Brett Rypien to help at quarterback. Rypien is familiar with offensive coordinator Shan Waldron’s system so he can help both Williams and Tyson Bagent learn the system. Rypien does not have much to offer other than that, however.
Bagent was a surprise for the Chicago Bears last season. He was an undrafted rookie who ended up winning the QB2 job. He got to start four games when starter Justin Fields hurt his shoulder. He did just enough to keep the team interested in him.
The problem with Bagent is that if he needs to be depended upon for an extended period he will struggle. As we saw last season, as he played more he struggled. The Chicago Bears are in a position to compete for the division title. If something happens to Williams they need someone who can come in and step up.
With that in mind, Poles could still look for another veteran quarterback who can step in and take over the offense. We saw how Joe Flacco took over the offense and led the Cleveland Browns into the playoffs. The Bears need someone who can do that for them.
Rypien is not the guy who can do that. Last season with the Los Angeles Rams, he completed just 47.4 percent of his passes. He had zero touchdowns and one interception. In the past two seasons, he had just two touchdowns and five interceptions. If something does happen to Williams, neither Bagent nor Rypien could be depended on.
We could see Poles pull the trigger during or after training camp. We know that he is not shy about reversing his course. He signed P.J. Walker last season to be the backup quarterback. Bagent did a good job during camp and in preseason games. Poles felt comfortable enough to cut ties with Walker.
This is an important season for Poles and the Chicago Bears. With all of the improvements, they need to make the playoffs. Additionally, having a proven veteran who has experienced all of the ups and downs of the NFL would help Williams. If down the road someone like Ryan Tannehill is available, he could be a perfect addition. For now, however, Rypien should be just a training camp body.
