Punter
The Bears let go of veteran punter Pat O’Donnell this offseason. He is now with the hated Green Bay Packers. O’Donnell had been with the Bears since he was drafted in 2014 and provided a reliable leg often used in the John Fox and Matt Nagy regimes.
With his departure, the Bears signed Ryan Winslow in free agency and drafted Trenton Gill in round 7 of the draft. Gill received first-team all-conference honors in his final season for North Carolina State. He averaged 45.1 yards per punt and also split time as a kickoff specialist for the Wolfpack.
Questions have come out recently about Gill’s preparedness to play in gusty and cold conditions at Soldier Field. If the rookie can be coached up on how to punt in Bear weather, he should be able to succeed Winslow before September. Winslow had a stint with the Bears in 2018, when he lasted from April before being cut in August. In five seasons, Winslow has played in only five career games. Two of them came in 2021 when he averaged 38.6 a punt for the Carolina Panthers.
