Late Round and UDFA Special Teamers
One of the easiest ways rookies make the roster is to break through into the special teams depth chart. These players will get to experience what new head coach Matt Eberflus means by the HITS philosophy of hustle, intensity, taking the ball away and smarts.
Dominique Robinson was taken at the edge position in the 5th round of the draft. Robinson, who many scouts are quick to praise for athletic ability (he had a tremendous relative athletic score), has experience playing on special teams for the Miami of Ohio. He will likely work with Hightower before he sees consistent reps in Eberflus’s new defensive scheme.
Elijah Hicks, taken in the 7th round of the draft as a safety, has experience playing special teams for the California Golden Bears. Hicks has a long way to go before he sees much time with the starting defense, as the Bears have the position stacked with Eddie Jackson and rookie Jaquan Brisker. Hicks will likely be more of a project player for Eberflus. He can make a big impact on special teams this season by using his speed and physicality to bring down kick and punt returners.
The Bears also have a slew of undrafted free agents that will be competing for spots this weekend. Here are few that might be interesting to see this weekend.
Savon Scarver, wide receiver, Utah State, has experience returning kicks for the Utah Utes. Jack Sanborn, Linebacker, Wisconsin, will have a chance to show his mettle blocking or defending on special teams. Jaylon Jones, defense back, Ole Miss, will have a chance to show he can bring down a shifty returner as well.
