Losing running back Tarik Cohen this off-season has created a need to fill the void the Chicago Bears have missed in his absence since week three of the 2021 season. David Montgomery has been a solid number one back, and Khalil Herbert number two, but both are physical runners who don’t have the speed and agility Cohen brought to make the offense dangerous with passing checkdowns.
Cohen was drafted to help bring explosiveness to the backfield to aid the development of then-rookie Mitchell Trubisky. New GM Ryan Poles has subtly been making roster moves in Free Agency to help Justin Fields, bringing in veteran wide receivers and offensive lineman. Those two positions were glaring needs last year and still need solidification, but helping Fields will require a nifty running back when he needs to get the ball out of hands fast. And he had to do that a lot in 2021.
Head coach Matt Eberflus has suggested the Bears need a lightning-running back to go with their thunder. These sorts of tandems were used to succeed in offenses with Tom Brady and James White, or Drew Brees and Alvin Kamara. While the Bears shouldn’t use early draft capital to acquire a running back, here are three interesting options they might be able to pick up on late Saturday.
