Latest rumor from an analyst displays that Ryan Poles is pushing against the Chicago Bears hiring Ben Johnson
Charlie Campbell of Walter Football dropped a big rumor on Wednesday that gives a further update on the Ben Johnson to the Chicago Bears connection. Johnson is without a doubt the hottest coaching option on the market this offseason and with the Bears having the most enticing job, a partnership makes too much sense.
Campbell’s report definitely put wind into Chicago Bears fan’s sails.
“Rumors I’m hearing on Bears head coach opening via team sources: Lions OC Ben Johnson wants the job, but Ryan Poles has reservations. There is a lot of belief that Johnson would push Poles out. – Johnson is said to want Commanders assistent GM Lance Newmark as the GM. Newmark was with Johnson in Detroit. – Poles has a history with Vikings DC Brian Flores, and Flores is a top candidate for Poles,” per Campbell.
There is so much to unpack with this report, but the biggest nugget is that Poles isn’t sold on Johnson as the next leader of this Chicago Bears locker room. Fans and followers of this franchise across the world are most likely panicking when reading this report from Campbell, and you can’t blame them. Johnson seems to be as much of a slam-dunk candidate in a coaching search as one will find. He checks all of the boxes and impressed the Chicago Bears front office both times Detroit faced them this season.
Johnson still has some unfinished business that he is looking to complete with the Lions. They are pursuing the NFC’s top seed in a Sunday night matchup with Minnesota in week 18. The Bears should be cheering for a Lions victory in that contest, as it would allow for them to first interview Johnson earlier due to the bye that Detroit would possess. However, none of this matters if Poles can’t get totally on board with bringing Johnson in to begin with.
Poles could be forced out of town if the rest of the Bears FO falls in love with Johnson
The other major Johnson-related piece of information to take out of Campbell’s report is that Johnson might not be the biggest fan of Poles. This makes things a bit more understandable on Poles’ side of things if this is the word that got leaked first rather than the other way around. No matter who said what first, Kevin Warren might be forced to make a decision.
If the Chicago Bears CEO can’t have Johnson and Poles together, he will have to choose who he likes better for the future of the franchise. One thing that helps Johnson’s case in Warren’s eyes is that he has a general manager candidate supposedly lined up in Lance Newmark. If the offensive guru can do enough to convince Warren to prioritize him, Poles might be forced out of Chicago without much say.
Johnson would work wonders for the future of the Bears offense
Johnson would get to grow the connection between Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze for years if the organization selects him to be the next head coach. Odunze in particular is just scratching the surface of who he can become as an elite NFL wide receiver. After seeing Johnson’s work with Jared Goff in the Lions offense, it’s easy to see that Williams would be in good hands, but Odunze would be as well.
