Tyler Nubin, Minnesota
The Chicago Bears could double-dip with University of Minnesota defensive backs. They selected cornerback Terell Smith last season and he had a good rookie campaign. He showed an ability to do a pretty good job as a starter. Now they could go with safety Tyler Nubin.
Nubin has great instincts on the field and has good range. He can be a big playmaker in the secondary. In 55 games for the Golden Gophers, he recorded a school-record 13 interceptions. He added 207 tackles. He was named to the All-Big Ten First Team and the Sporting News All-America First Team.
Nubin measures in at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds so he has great size for the position. He can take on tight ends and slot receivers without too much difficulty. He has good vision and can recognize receivers’ routes quickly.
Against the run, he diagnoses the play quickly and gets to the ball. Once he gets there, he is not afraid to get in there and make the tackle. He uses great technique and rarely misses on his tackle attempts.
When he is blocked, Nubin does a good job of using his hand strength to help him shed the block quickly.
It would be great to see Nubin and Brisker at the safety positions. He would fit in well with the youth of the Chicago Bears’ secondary.
