Calen Bullock, USC
Calen Bullock could be the USC player the Chicago Bears select instead of Caleb Williams. At 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, he is a lean and long free safety who can excel playing as a center fielder. He has great range and gets to the ball quickly. He still has room to gain some weight on his frame, however.
While he doesn’t have elite explosiveness, Bullock has excellent long speed. He might be the best ball hawk in this class of safeties. He has nine career interceptions and returned two of them for touchdowns. This is what Jackson was doing for years for the Chicago Bears.
At USC Bullock was used primarily as a single-high safety. However, he was able to come down and move to the slot. In zone coverage, he shows excellent awareness and instincts. He gets good depth in his dropbacks while keeping his eyes on the quarterback. His ability to quickly read where the ball is going to go allows him to get a jump on the play.
Bullock was a wide receiver in high school and he retained his ball skills. He understands what receivers want to do and where they will go on their routes so he could anticipate well.
Against the run, Bullock quickly recognizes the play and gets to the ball carrier quickly. Despite his slender frame, he has no hesitance in making hits. He prides himself on being physical. That makes him gaining weight a critical point.
