The Chicago Bears’ quarterback room got a little more cramped this week as the team came to terms with veteran Trevor Siemian on a two-year deal according to his agent early Friday morning.

Siemian is a familiar name in the Chicagoland area as he played his college ball at Northwestern from 2011-2014. The Bears will be the 30-year-old’s sixth NFL team after being drafted in the 7th round by the Denver Broncos in 2014. He spent last year with the New Orleans Saints appearing in six games, and the 2020 season with the New York Jets starting one game. His career numbers so far total up to a 13-16 starting record throwing for 6,843 yards, 41 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. He also spent time with the Minnesota Vikings in 2018 and on the Tennessee Titan’s practice squad in 2020.
Attention now turns to the incumbent Bears backup quarterback Nick Foles who is on the last year of a three year agreement. Speculation has been that GM Ryan Poles has been looking to move the veteran to free up additional cap space. With this move, that appears much more likely depending on the league’s interest in Foles. If the Bears outright release Foles this offseason, it will save the team $3 million against the cap while carrying a $7.6 million dead cap number. If the Bears are able to find a trade partner, the cap savings increases to $8 million while decreasing the dead cap amount to $2.6 million.
