The Chicago Bears will sign former 49ers defensive end Ray McDonald to a contract, according to ESPN Insider Chris Mortensen. The Bears and McDonald have been working on a deal since Monday but now everything seems to be coming into place for the two sides.
The 30-year-old McDonald spent time with current Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio in San Francisco before being cut by the team in December. McDonald was released by the 49ers after rape allegations surfaced. However, he was not charged in that case.
In 2014, McDonald started 14 games recording 39 tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble. Last season, Pro Football Focus had McDonald as their #12 DE. His role should be similar with the Bears as he’s reunited with Vic Fangio who he spent four seasons with in San Francisco.
The Bears have now boosted their defensive line with the addition of McDonald and earlier signing of Jarvis Jenkins. It will be interesting to see what they do with the rotations as we should get an idea soon. It also could be a sign that the Bears may target offense come the NFL Draft. With the acquisitions on the defensive line and linebacker core, safety and cornerback are also there to be addressed.
