The future of the Chicago Bears might not be good.
The team is coming off a disappointing 2014 season in which they went 5-11 after big preseason expectations. The team earned the seventh pick in the 2015 NFL Draft with the chance to grab a young impact player right away. While we wait to see if Kevin White pans out (not off to a great start), ESPN ranked the Bears 27th among the 32 NFL teams based on talent under the age of 25.
Ouch.
The Bears fell one spot from last season’s ranking of 27th, getting no love from ESPN. But should they? The Bears motive is to rebuild and do that with younger talent but so far they haven’t been able to do that right away. In fact, the Bears lead the league with most players over the age of 30 at 13.
ESPN doesn’t think the Bears have done a good job of assembling a young and talented roster:
The middle of the defense has been a big problem, and that’s where linebacker Jonathan Bostic and safety Brock Vereen have to get better as starters. Cornerback Kyle Fuller had a good early buzz that night Colin Kaepernick threw a pick parade for him, but Fuller finished the season ranked 69th in adjusted success rate in coverage. Fox has done some great defensive turnarounds before, but he has his work cut out for him in Chicago.
The good news for the Bears is that the teams that finished behind them include the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts and Seattle Seahawks. All reached their conference championship games. The Bears will also get younger during this rebuild, but will they have the talent to improve?
