Backup Defensive Tackle: Pickens vs Randolph Jr vs Cowart
Last season, the Chicago Bears used rookie Gervon Dexter to back up Justin Jones at the three-technique. That worked out splendidly. The two were instrumental in helping the defense go from ranking 31st against the run in 2022 to number one in 2023.
Dexter did such a fine job that the Chicago Bears allowed Jones to leave for the Arizona Cardinals this offseason. Now they need an effective backup.
Last season, the Beas also had Zacch Pickens. He had a good season backing up Andrew Billings at nose guard. He can play the three-technique as well, though. Additionally, the team picked up Keith Randolph Jr. as an undrafted rookie.
Pickens has the experience from last season to step in and become a key backup to Dexter. The two young players have tons of energy and athleticism to wreak havoc. Pickens has the strength to take on the big blockers.
Keith Randolph hails from the University of Illinois. He is a big plug in the middle. At 6-foot-4, 300 pounds, it takes a lot to move him out of the way. He might still need to develop more of his pass-rushing skills but as a run-stopper, he is good. He could play enough snaps to keep Dexter fresh.
There are a few undrafted players on the roster who are playing key positions. Jack Sanborn is the starting SAM linebacker and T.J. Edwards is the starting WILL linebacker. A few years ago they also had Christian Jones who played several seasons. It goes to show that just because you weren’t drafted it doesn’t mean you cannot make an impact. Randolph hopes he can be another success story.
Byron Cowart faces an uphill battle to become the main backup. He might make the team to give added depth down the roster.
