Will Davis make an impact? Will he even be available?
One of the biggest questions surrounding the offensive line is what happens with Nate Davis. Davis signed as a free agent last season to complement Darnell Wright on the right side of the offensive line. However, he dealt with a family death and injury that had him struggle.
The thought was that during the offseason Davis could get everything in place and be ready to go. That did not happen, though. He did not attend OTAs. That was not much of a problem since they are voluntary. However, it would have been nice for him to do some work and learn the new offense.
The veteran minicamp started and that is mandatory. Many wanted to see Davis show he was ready. Again, however, they were disappointed. While Davis attended the camp, he did not practice. He also had a boot on the right foot he injured late last season.
Davis’ absence set a lot of red flags for the team. The coaches used several players in his place. They are reportedly interested in using someone at right guard in case Davis is not ready to start. Ryan Bates and Coleman Shelton are battling for center. The loser could end up being the backup right guard. If Davis is not ready to start, Bates/Shelton can step in and start.
If Davis is not ready, the Chicago Bears could cut bait. We have already seen that Poles is not afraid to admit a mistake and correct it. We saw how he wasted a valuable second round pick for Chase Claypool. It did not work and Poles was not hesitant in banishing him to Miami, even though he got back much less than he paid in the first place.
We also saw how Poles did what he could to get a position right. He had Justin Fields but wanted Williams. He knew keeping Fields would be a problem so he traded him. If keeping Davis becomes a problem, Poles will have no problem moving him.
