How will the new tight ends situation look?
While the wide receivers group gets all of the attention (and deservedly so), the Chicago Bears tight ends group could be just as important.
We have not seen the tight ends be a huge part of the offense. Sure, Cole Kmet has done a good job of progressing in his career. He is a big part of the offense now. However, there has not been much behind him. Last season, the Bears had RObtert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis.
Tonyan did not make the impact many felt he could have. Then, throw in the big drop he had in the Bears’ Week 15 game against the Cleveland Browns that helped prevent a win, and his time in Chicago was considered a failure. Lewis, meanwhile, is basically more of a coach on the field than a real player.
Lewis returned, but he will again be there to help the young players. One player who will play a big part is Gerald Everett. Everett and Kmet may have a field day helping Williams. They will provide the rookie with big, athletic targets. That will be especially important in the red zone.
The Chicago Bears will have many weapons to get into the end zone. With D.J. Moore, Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze, D’Andre Swift, Khalil Herbert, and Roschon Johnson, Williams will have a plethora of targets. Throw in the two biggest in Kmet and Everett, and opposing defenses will not be able to cover everyone. That will leave one of the tight ends open.
New Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron likes using the two-tight ends scheme. Everett and Kmet will be on the field together many times. That gives the quarterback options. Giving Williams options makes him a dangerous man. He will be able to carve up defenses with all of the talent he has around him.
