The reports continue to be filed in for the Chicago Bears head coaching vacancy in this upcoming hiring cycle. Among the options that the team has looked into thus far, a new name has surfaced for the historic franchise.
The Chicago Bears have reported interest in interviewing Kliff Kingsbury for the head coach position
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN has reported the Chicago Bears’ interest in the offensive-minded coach who could be looking for his second head coaching gig in the NFL. Kingsbury spent time with the Arizona Cardinals where he got the opportunity to work with Kyler Murray.
“I expect Kingsbury to interview there (Chicago),” Fowler says. “As was told to me, most or all the names that have been linked to the Bears are people Chicago would like to interview. Observers believe experience will be a key factor in the hiring process, and Kingsbury has experience coupled with quarterback cachet.”
Kingsbury would add to the list of two offensive minds already in the mix for the Chicago Bears job in Ben Johnson and Joe Brady. Fowler compared Kingsbury’s approach to this offseason and interviews to how Johnson might look at things.
“Now we’ve heard the buzz word “selective” with Johnson’s approach to the cycle. Kingsbury will also be selective, I’m told. He’s still getting paid head coach money from Arizona and gets to coach Daniels on a Washington team that should be even better next season. I don’t think he’s ironing shirts for job interviews just yet. Keep in mind, Kingsbury was down the road with the Jets in 2019 before he took the Arizona job, so New York could double back with him.”
Not many people realize that Arizona is still paying Kingsbury despite losing the job a few seasons ago. He has all the right to be as patient as possible before he accepts any offer that might be on the table for him next month. Similar to other coaching candidates in this cycle, his previous head coaching experience in the NFL will certainly help along the way and eventually will get the chance to lead a franchise again.
The Chicago Bears passed on Kliff Kingsbury for the offensive coordinator role last offseason
How the Bears approach Kingsbury in this interview process will be rather interesting given that he wasn’t offered the offensive coordinator role for the organization last offseason. The team electing to acquire Shane Waldron’s services backfired massively as the former Seahawks offensive coordinator did not last a season in the Windy City.
Kingsbury will have questions for the Chicago Bears front office if an interview is presented to him and surely last offseason will come up in conversation. There should not be any bad blood or resentment from either party for not offering the gig to the former Texas Tech head coach, as that’s just the way business goes in the NFL.
Why Kliff Kingsbury could be a good fit for the Chicago Bears
One major green flag for Kingsbury in this process that could help him along with his previous head coaching experience in the NFL is his prior work with Caleb Williams. The two spent a year together at USC just before Williams made the leap to the league and Kingsbury was brought back to the biggest stage to lead the Washington Commanders offense.
Having chemistry with Williams should be the top priority for the Chicago Bears brass when conducting these head coaching interviews. Kingsbury will have a leg up on the competition in that category when the time comes for decisions to be made.
