The Chicago Bears are in the pursuit to find there next Head Coach and they could be looking at this wildcard candidate.
The Chicago Bears Head Coaching position will be one of the most sought after positions in the NFL this offseason. With a young Quarterback and who figures to be a star in the league in Caleb Williams, along with offensive threat D.J. Moore and Keenan Allen, any offensive minded coach would be salivating to take the job.
In a new report which appeared in the DaBearsBlog written by Jeff Hughes lists Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offensive Coordinator Liam Coen as a ‘wildcard candidate’ for the Chicago Bears Head Coaching job.
Who is Liam Coen?
The 39-year-old Coen had his first season this year as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offensive Coordinator in which he help lead the Bucs to a 10-7 record and finishing first in their division. In Tampa Bay, Liam Coen has some nice offensive weapons at his disposal such as Quarterback Baker Mayfield, wideout Mike Evans, and running back Bucky Irving.
For his part and having those offensive threats Coen offensive according to Fox Sports was ranked third in total offense (399.5 yds), third in passing yards (250.4), fourth in rushing (149.1), and fourth in points per game (29.5).
Given how well Liam Coen ran the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive, it is one of the reason why they’re in the playoffs and will be a formidable team to face. Playing the Washington Commanders in the NFC Wildcard game, Coen and his offensive weapons are primed to do well.
Would Liam Coen make a good Head Coach for the Chicago Bears?
Adding Liam Coen to a Chicago Bears offensive that was rated one of the worst in the NFL is what the Bears need to be successful. According to Jeff Hughes of DaBearsBlog he writes about Coen:
“Liam Coen is the wildcard in this process, and I think he’s been every bit as impressive as Johnson this season. Is he ready to be a head coach? Nobody knows, but Coen would be a quarterback-centric hire.
- Coen’s work with both the running game and tight ends in Tampa have been something of a revelation in 2024.”
Having a ‘quarterback-centric’ Head Coach is exactly who the Bears need to bring in to unlock Caleb Williams untapped potential. Having did what he did with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with unlocking Baker Mayfield’s potential the same could hold true for Coen doing it with Williams.
Also with Coen’s ability to unlock both the receiving and running game, he could also figure to unlock the potentials of Keenan Allen, D.J. Moore, and running backs D’andre Swift and Roschon Johnson.
Even though Liam Coen is considered a ‘wildcard candidate for the job, with teams in the NFL trending towards hiring younger and more inexperienced Head Coaches to pair with their young Quarterbacks the Chicago Bears hiring Liam Coen would make a lot of sense.
