Every off-season, there comes a point where lists and rankings are made, because there’s a period with no real football to talk about and we’re all really hungry for some more.
CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco came out with his annual list of one player on each team that is “overrated, more name than game.”
This year, for the Chicago Bears, it’s franchise tagged Alshon Jeffrey. Yikes.
Prisco had this to say about the wide receiver:
When he’s on the field, he’s a good player — not a top-five receiver. But availability has been a problem. He’s started 16 games just once in his four seasons with the Bears and had only eight starts last season. That’s probably why the Bears didn’t give him a long-term extension, but rather put the franchise tag on him to make this a show-me season.
In a way, he has a point.
Jeffrey isn’t one of the 5 or perhaps even 10 best receivers in the league and he has had a problem staying healthy during his time in Chicago. This season is a bit make-or-break for him.
However, it doesn’t help that the weapons surrounding him aren’t exactly what you’d call up to par. Expect him to see a lot of double teams this upcoming season, which could have an impact on his stat line.
The rest of the NFC North shaped out like this: Green Bay Packers – WR Randall Cobb (not so sure on that one), Detroit Lions OT Riley Reiff and Minnesota Vikings – TE Kyle Rudolph.
Former Bears TE Martellus Bennett, now a member of the New England Patriots, also makes an appearance on the list.
