The Chicago Blackhawks have a solid blend of veterans and young talent on their roster to end another forgetful season in this long rebuild. General manager Kyle Davidson did his due diligence this past summer by bringing in more NHL-level talent in free agency with the hopes of getting the franchise out of the league’s basement in the standings.
While not much changed in the win column, the group has played a much better brand of hockey down the stretch to close out the campaign. The veterans that have remained with the team have done a nice job welcoming in all of the young pieces that have made their debuts this year. One of the oldest players in the league that is in his first and last year with the Blackhawks was nominated for an award on Wednesday morning.
Chicago Blackhawks’ Pat Maroon nominated for the Masterton Trophy
Pat Maroon announced last month that he will be retiring from hockey at the end of the season. The 36-year-old joined Chicago over the summer on a one-year contract and he will be playing in his final NHL game next Tuesday in Ottawa.
It was revealed on Wednesday that Maroon has been nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy by the Blackhawks chapter of the PHWA. The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is given out every year to the player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. The award is named in honor of Bill Masterton, who passed away from injuries he sustained in a game as a member of the Minnesota North Stars.
Maroon is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and has earned all of the recognition he has across the league. Everyone knows not to mess with him, as he is one of the top “goons” in the NHL. Despite his physical play-style, the man known as “Big Rig” is seen as one of the more respectful players in the game and this nomination is well-deserved.
