Instead of the Cubs playing today, it seemed like the Cubs put up an instant replay from Thursday for today’s game. The Cubs dropped the 2nd game of the season to that Washington Nationals 7-4 due to Kerry Wood and Carlos Marmol again.
The 8th inning struggles continues as Kerry Wood and Carlos Marmol gave up 5 runs. Kerry Wood was one strike away from ending the 8th inning with no harm. But Wood gave up an home run to Danny Espinosa and it went down hill from there. Carlos Marmol eventually came in and could not record an out. He was also one strike away from no harm, but he does not have his strikeout pitch anymore. Shawn Camp was the pitcher to come in and finally end the inning.
Before the 8th inning, the Cubs were leading 4-2. The Cubs jumped out to a 1-0 leading when Joe Mather scored on a wild pitch by pitcher Gio Gonzalez. The Nationals eventually took the lead 2-1 on a 2-run homer by 1B Adam LaRoche. As he was trying to make-up for a 3 strikeout game on opening day. The Cubs finally had good clutch hitting as Reed Johnson hit a 2 out – 2 run triple and Joe Mather followed that up with a 2 out rbi single. 2 bench players showed what they had and want to earn playing time. They did not upset their coach Dale Sveum.
Other notes:
**Starlin Castro reached base safely for the 42nd straight game (best in the majors) and his hit streak hit 14.
**Before the game, the Cubs called up pitcher Rodrigo Lopez and outrighted IF Luis Valbuena to Triple A.
The Cubs will try to avoid the sweep tomorrow and get their first win of the year as Jeff Samardzija will take on Jordan Zimmerman at 1.20 p.m. central.
