The Chicago Cubs are going to the playoffs for the third-consecutive season as they look to repeat as World Series champions.
They locked up the NL Central on Wednesday night when they beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-1. The win eliminated the Milwaukee Brewers from NL Central contention, just two after the Cardinals were eliminated with a loss.
With the postseason locked in, the Cubs did something they haven’t done in 100-plus years: Make the playoffs for three consecutive seasons.

The last time the Cubs accomplished this feat was from 1906-1908. The Cubs won the NL Pennant in 1906 and then back-to-back World Series titles in 1907 and 1908.
The closest they’ve come to achieving this feat in the past in making the playoffs in 2007 and 2008 but falling short in 2009.

They’ve also accomplished something they haven’t done in the past three seasons. The Cubs haven’t clinched a playoff spot with a win, instead both times were losses. In 2015 the Cubs clinched when they lost on a Friday afternoon and the San Francisco Giants lost later that night.
In 2016, the Cubs clinched the division when the Cardinals lost to the Giants late at night on the West Coast.
Chicago will meet the Washington Nationals in the first round of the NL playoffs beginning next week. Start times, playoff roster and rotation will be announced in the coming days.
