Just minutes after their 6-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds at home on Monday night, the Chicago Cubs made a move.
According to several reports, the Cubs traded reliever Mike Montgomery to Kansas City for catcher Martín Maldonado. The move was later confirmed by Theo Epstein following the game:
In addition to the trade, Epstein also announced that starting catcher Willson Contreras will be going on the 10-day IL Tuesday retroactive to two days ago.
The move comes at a crucial time for the Cubs with the injury news to Contreras. Backup Victor Caratini has shown some flashes of potential but he’s also struggled at times including in Monday’s loss to the Reds.
Montgomery leaves the Cubs after being acquired at the 2016 MLB Trade Deadline. He recorded the final out for the Cubs in the 2016 World Series but has struggled in 2019. In 20 games, Montgomery has a 5.67 ERA and a WHIP of 1.778.
Maldonado is slashing .224/.288/.359 this season but is known more for his defense. He could be a key backup for the Cubs down the stretch.
