According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, the Chicago Cubs have acquired catcher George Kottaras from the Kansas City Royals. Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports the Cubs will send cash over to Kansas City. No corresponding move had to be made since the Cubs 40-man roster was under 40 players. The Cubs 40-man roster is now full with the addition of Kottaras.
Kottaras is expected to compete for a back-up spot in spring training. Kottaras is not a great offensive player, but he is good behind the plate. According to reports online, Kottaras is known for his play behind the plate and how he frames pitches. Also, Kottaras will take a free pass.
Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer are familiar will Kottaras work with their time in Boston during the 2009 season.
I would bet anything that Kottaras will be the back-up to Welington Castillo come opening day. He obvious won’t be as good as Dioner Navarro, but he’ll be a solid back-up!
