For a while there it looked like the only move the Chicago Cubs were going to make was acquiring Tony Kemp from Houston. Even as the clock struck the 3 p.m. CST trade deadline, things were quiet for the franchise.
There were some rumblings leading up to today that the Cubs were interested in Detroit Tigers outfielder Nicholas Castellanos and just minutes after the deadline, the deal was announced.
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal first broke the news just minutes after that deadline:
The Cubs will send pitching prospects Paul Richan and Alex Lange back to Detroit in the deal. Lange is a former first-round pick of the Cubs in 2017.
Castellanos gives Joe Maddon another option in the outfield for the Cubs and more importantly, a right-handed bat to add to his lineup. He’s been really good against lefties this season, with an OPS of over 1.000.
