The Chicago Cubs have had some talented outfielders over the years, especially defensively. Pete Crow-Armstrong is currently their standout defender, but a few years ago a former first round pick tore through the minor leagues, was a part of the 2016 World Series, and then eventually his bat limited him from a regular MLB role. That player was Albert Almora Jr, and he has now signed with the Miami Marlins.
Albert Almora Jr as a member of the Chicago Cubs
Drafted sixth overall in 2012, Almora Jr ripped through the minor leagues and debuted in 2016, when the Cubs won the World Series. That year he served as a defensive replacement late in games. Throughout five years with the organization he slashed .271/.309/.398, but his numbers drastically dropped off in 2019 and during the shortened 2020 season.
What happened to Albert Almora Jr after he left the Cubs?
Following the 2020 season, Almora Jr became a free agent and signed with the New York Mets. In 47 games that year he collected just six total hits over 54 plate appearances and eventually he was designated for assignment towards the end of the year. After that, the Cincinnati Reds gave him his final big league opportunity, which went better, but not great.
In 2023 he did not play affiliated baseball, but last year he was a minor league player in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization in which he slashed .292/.349/.438 across 127 Triple-A games.
The Miami Marlins signed Albert Almora Jr to a contract
In 2025, Almora Jr will get an opportunity with the Marlins as he is a non-roster invitee to their big league camp. Miami’s MLB outfield group does not consist of a lot of established players, so there’s a chance that if he performs well again in the minor leagues he could get another call to the big leagues. At 30 years old, this is the opportunity he needs if he wants to re-establish himself as a MLB player.
