The Chicago Cubs announced today that they have avoided arbitration with outfielder Justin Ruggiano. After not being able to come to come to an agreement before hand, the Cubs and Ruggiano agreed on 2 million for the 2014 season. Ruggiano was asking for 2.45 million and the Cubs were offering 1.6 million.
The Cubs acquired Ruggiano at the Winter Meetings in exchange for outfielder Brian Bogusevic and he is expected to platoon in right field with Nate Schierholtz.
The Cubs avoided arbitration with starting pitcher Travis Wood last week and now only have two players not signed through the 2014 season: starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija and second baseman Darwin Barney.
Side note: According to Chris Cotillo, the Seattle Mariners have signed ex-Cub starting pitcher Scott Baker to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training.
