With the Chicago Cubs still needing to add this offseason, this insider expects them to add more.
The Chicago Cubs have made some promising acquisitions this offseason to help their chances to make the playoffs. Still looking to add another high-end starting pitcher and a backend of the bullpen piece, USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale expects the Chicago Cubs to add more before the offseason is over.
The Chicago Cubs acquisitions so far
The Cubs made their biggest splash this offseason with adding superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros. Since adding Tucker, the Cubs have also added catcher Carson Kelly to pair with Miguel Amaya, left-handed reliever Caleb Thielbar who they signed in free agency, and added reliever Eli Morgan in a trade with the Cleveland Guardians to add depth to their bullpen. The Cubs still need to add more to the rotation and bullpen before the offseason is over and columnist Bob Nightengale thinks they will by say in his latest column:
“The Cubs made the biggest splash of the trade season by acquiring All-Star right fielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros, but also dumped Cody Bellinger and his $27.5 million contract on the New York Yankees to even out the money,” writes Nightengale. “They’ve only spent $43.3 million in free agency. It’s hard to imagine they won’t do something else to try finally toppling Milwaukee in the NL Central.”
Who will the Chicago Cubs add?
The Chicago Cubs have been rumored to add Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Luis Castillo all offseason long as well as possibly adding closers Tanner Scott and Carlos Estevez to their bullpen. The Cubs have also been tied to All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman given the Cubs have a need for a third baseman and they man not want to just rely on top prospect Matt Shaw to fully have the job given he is still unproven at the Major League level.
Since the Chicago Cubs freed themselves of Cody Bellinger’s salary fans have wondered where they would divert those funds to better the roster given Bellinger’s salary was the reason the Cubs were giving fans for not spending this offseason. Adding Luis Castillo to the rotation as their number two to push Justin Steele to the three spot in the rotation, would really give the Cubs a dominant 1-3.
Even just adding Estevez or Scott for the backend of the bullpen to pair with Porter Hodge, Tyson Miller, and now Caleb Thielbar will greatly improve the Cubs, who were the middle of the pact last year, but still decent with being 13th in bullpen ERA with it being 3.85 and the best in baseball in strikeout per nine rate of 9.9. Adding any of these players to a Cubs roster that seems hungry to make the players would be the last piece of the puzzle for this offseason.
