The Chicago Cubs are still attempting to improve their starting rotation in this MLB offseason. They struck a deal to land Tyler Chatwood as a backend piece to their rotation and they will likely add at least one more pitcher.
With both John Lackey and Jake Arrieta being free agents, the Cubs had two holes in their rotation. They will return Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks, Jose Quintana and even possible backend guy Mike Montgomery.
The Cubs hope they can add an ace to their staff and even met with Yu Darvhis last month. But the latest report suggests they still have some interest in Arrieta.
USA Today reporter Bob Nightengale wrote on Tuesday that the Cubs are willing to bring Arrieta back but on one condition. Here’s what he wrote:
Oh sure, the Chicago Cubs still need a front-line starter, and would be willing to bring back Arrieta on a four-year deal for about $110 million, but sorry, they refuse to dish out a six-year deal
The problem with the Cubs wanting to bring Arrieta back on a four-year deal is the fact that Arrieta is reportedly commanding a deal for six years. It’s very likely this will be Arrieta’s final contract of his career, so why not get paid?
Big difference in Cubs offering Jake Arrieta $110M/4 years, as @BNightengale reported, and any 6-year deal north of $150M. That’s more reasonable price. Still prefer Darvish but Arrieta at 110/4 good alternative.

The Cubs still need that top ace and are hoping to land either Darvish or Arrieta. This latest report is good news for those hoping Arrieta returns but will he take the four years?
