The Chicago Cubs have have reached a 1-year deal with catcher George Kontarras to avoid arbitration, according to Jon Heyman of CBSsports.com. Kontarras will make 1.075 million next season, plus incentives. Kontarras will back-up starting catcher Welington Castillo.
The Cubs acquired Kontarras from the Kansas City Royals on November 26th for cash. Kontarras was designated for assignment by the Royals and the Cubs decided to trade for him instead of waiting to claim him on waivers.
The Cubs are not in the market for a catcher anymore and can cross that position of their check list, unless they sign a catcher to a minor league deal for depth and Triple-A.
Kontarras will be a good back-up catcher and was a good trade – signing!
