The Chicago Cubs claimed pitcher Brett Marshall off waivers from the New York Yankees and lose pitcher Liam Hendricks to the Baltimore Orioles, according to multiple reports.
The 23-year-old Marshall went 7-10 with a 5.15 earn run average last season in Triple-A. . The Yankees designated Marshall for assignment on December 19th to make room for outfielder Carlos Beltran on the 40-man roster. The Cubs will likely not keep Marshall on their 40-man roster for long and try to pass him through waivers. The Cubs will then keep him as depth in Triple-A and keep him as a starter.
On the same day, the Cubs lose Hendricks to the Orioles. The Cubs never had Hendricks for long as they claimed him off waivers from the Minnesota Twins on December 13th.
With both moves cross-cancelling each other, the Cubs 40-man roster still stands at 39. The Cubs still haven’t announced the signing of relief pitcher Jose Veras. When they do, the 40-man roster will be full.
Side note: According to Bruce Levine, the Cubs have checked the medicals on relief pitcher Jesse Crain. Other teams have as well.
