The Chicago Cubs announced that they have claimed relief pitcher Eduardo Sanchez off of waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals. Sanchez will be sent to Triple-A Iowa. With the addition of Sanchez, the Cubs 40-man roster currency stands at 40. However, the Cubs 40-man roster will be back at 39 prior to today’s game. The Cubs have to DFA one player (likely Michael Bowden) before today’s game in the wake of activating starting pitcher Matt Garza off of the 15-day DL.
Sanchez is 24-years old and throws right-handed. Sanchez has not pitched for the Cardinals this year, but for their Triple-A team. In 2011/2012 for the Cardinals, Sanchez was 3-2 with a 3.40era. He also had 29 walks and 48 strikeouts in 45 innings. Sanchez, however, had a big drop from 2011 to 2012 and a main reason he hasn’t pitched in the big leagues this year and was put on waivers.
The Cubs are hoping he can get back to the 2011 form and be another great waiver pick-up like Shawn Camp was last year. He will start with Iowa Cubs, but with the bullpen struggles, he’ll likely be called up at some point this year.
