The Chicago Cubs have claimed right-handed pitcher Alex Burnett off of waivers from the Baltimore Orioles. Burnett was designated for assignment last week by the Orioles. As the corresponding move, the Cubs have officially placed relief pitcher Kyuji Fujikawa with a right forearm strain to open a spot on the 25-man roster for Burnett. Fujikawa re-injured his forearm in yesterday’s game and knew he was headed back to the DL.
Burnett is 25-years old and appeared in 2 games for the Orioles this year. However, he just pitched 1.1 innings and gave up 3 earned runs, 4 hits, 2 walks ands struck out 2. But has looked good in Triple-A if that even matters. The Cubs are hoping he does pitched good and turns out to be a great pick-up.
The Cubs 40-man roster currently stands at 40. However, may go down to 39 players. The Cubs may have released or DFA Eduardo Sanchez whom was claimed off of waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals last week. Sanchez is not on the Iowa Cubs roster anymore and the Iowa Cubs manager said he’s not with the team. At first thought, many believe he was the call-up. But with the news about Burnett, he’s likely gone.
