The Chicago Cubs are, in aggressive pursuit of All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman and have been all offseason.
The Cubs recently were reported, to have offered Bregman a four-year contract with an average annual value of $30 million.
So far, nothing has come of these reports, and Bregman still seems determined to get a long-term deal.
Chicago Cubs could lose out on Bregman
USA Today columnist, Bob Nightengale recently tweeted out that Bregman and his camp have no desire to sign a short-term deal and still are seeking a deal in the 6-7-year range.
“Free agent third baseman Alex Bregman still has no interest in a short-term contract and seeks a 6- or 7-year deal.”

This could throw a wrench into the Cubs’ plans on trying to sign Bregman, with the Cubs not willing to do a long-term deal. The Cubs are hesitant to give out another long-term deal, to a veteran like Bregman after seeing how Dansby Swanson has played so far. Which, is not fair, because Swanson has been a solid player for the Cubs.
Alex Bregman deserves a long-term deal
Bregman deserves a long-term deal after being such a productive major league and after taking discounts with the Astros to put championship clubs together. Even though Bregman would be a great fit in the Cubs lineup, if they’re not willing to budge and give Bregman what he wants, they will lose out on him.
The soon-to-be 31-year-old would be worth every penny if he is signed to a 6-7 year deal. Bregman is a proven winner and is a career .272/.366/.483 hitter. Bregman still is one of the top third basemen in the game, and he is showing no signs of slowing down.
Bringing in Bregman would be worth it, with being a proven winner. Having him on the ball club and someone who is still one of the best hitters in baseball can only benefit the Cubs. The Cubs have so many young guys coming up, and having Bregman around for those 6-7 years could do wonders for the development of some of the Cub’s top prospects.
Having Bregman signed and paired with Matt Shaw, Nico Hoerner, Swanson, and Micheal Busch for years to come would give the Cubs a solid core group of players. And if they can retain Tucker, then the Cubs will be one of the more dominant teams in the National League.
Gotta spend money to win
The Cubs have done well this offseason, with acquiring the necessary players to hopefully make a run at the playoffs.
If the Cubs could add Bregman, then that would cap what has been an amazing offseason and help the Cub’s chances of accomplishing that feat.
Sometimes, if you want to win, you have to spend a little money. In this case, if the Cubs truly want to win and want Bregman, then they need to spend a little money.
