The Chicago Cubs could be a potential suitor for this All-Star Closer from last year given their need for another late inning reliever.
The Chicago Cubs could figure to add another late inning reliever to their bullpen to pair with future star Porter Hodge. The Chicago Cubs have the potential of having a strong bullpen this season with it being a weakness for them in the past. With being tied to relievers Carlos Estevez and Tanner Scott and with both being a little too expensive, could the Chicago Cubs look to add All-Star Closer Kyle Finnegan instead to put the Cubs over the top?
Being projected as a fit for the Chicago Cubs
In his recent article on his projections for where all the available relievers still on the market will go, Bleacher Reports Zachary D. Rymer predicted that the 33-year-old Kyle Finnegan signing with the Cubs.
“The Nationals could bump lefty Jose A. Ferrer, who showed late-inning potential last season, into the closer role or pursue options in free agency and the trade market.”
Set to make $8.6 million in his final year of arbitration according to MLB Trade Rumors, the Nationals weren’t going to pay Finnegan when there was an internal option available. Finnegan in his five-year career with the Washington Nationals accumulated a record of 22-26 with an ERA of 3.56 in 291 games (290.1 innings pitched), with 88 career saves, and was named to his first All-Star team in 2024.
Signing Kyle Finnegan to pair with Porter Hodge could be a potential option for the Cubs to make. With Finnegan’s closing experience he could be the perfect mentor to help Hodge navigate the late innings in what will be his sophomore season. Both could figure to swing between the eighth and ninth innings giving the Cubs a solid back-inning tandem.
Does signing Kyle Finnegan make sense for the Cubs?
As it stands right now signing Brandon Finnegan should not be the route the Cubs should go down. With a decent number of right-handed options on the 40-man roster already, adding Finnegan would be a redundancy. The Chicago Cubs should instead look to add another left-handed reliever with the Cubs currently having four lefty options for the pen in Caleb Thielbar, Luke Little, Jordan Wicks, and Rob Zastryzny on their 40-man roster. Also having Porter Hodge ready to take the step forward and become the Chicago Cubs closer, signing Kyle Finnegan could figure to damage Hodge’s confidence.
