The Darwin Barney era is officially coming to an end in Chicago. The team announced that Barney has been designated for assignment to make room for Emilio Bonifacio who is returning from an injury.
The Cubs will now have 10 days to trade, waive or release the second baseman. With just 9 days until the trade deadline, the move makes sense now as they will be listening to offers. The Cubs should find a suitor for Barney who has been great defensively for the Cubs in his career. He has struggled offensively at times.
Barney won the Gold Glove award in 2012 beating out the Reds Brandon Phillips.
Second baseman and prospect Arismendy Alcantara has played well for the team since being called up in July. But it doesn’t mean he will stay for sure as the Cubs will have to make room for pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada.
