Major League Baseball is officially back and the Chicago Cubs have made their first move. While it isn’t a highly anticipated free-agent signing, the Cubs have extended manager Davis Ross to an extension through the 2024 season. Announced via the team’s Twitter account, the Cubs included a club option for the 2025 season.

Ross was introduced as the manager of the Cubs in October 2019. In his first two seasons as manager, Ross has accumulated a record of 105-117. His first year, the abbreviated 2020 season, saw Ross finish 3rd in Manager of the Year voting after a brief playoff appearance that saw the team exit in the opening round to the Miami Marlins.
After a disappointing campaign in 2021, the extension shows the Cubs still have great confidence in Ross. Extension talks began in October of last year and shortly after were discontinued due to Major League Baseball’s lockout. At the time, Jed Hoyer expressed hope that Ross would manage the team for years to come.
Now, with the extension in stone, expectations for the Cubs’ 2022 season are hanging in the balance. With the free agency market open, the Cubs are expected to be fairly aggressive. David Ross’ success in his third season as the Cubs’ manager will be greatly impacted by the moves that the Cubs are able, or unable, to make.
